After my health scare, I really got my zest for life back! Work hard but live harder! I try to have fun, just because I can. It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as it feels good and is fun. For example, I started painting. I'm not very good at it, but it's surprising what you can create if you can let go of the idea that it has to be good or beautiful. You don't have to be good at something to make it worthwhile. I would advise everyone to experiment and take on new challenges. That way, you can keep developing yourself and possibly discover new talents or hobbies.
I also did theatre in my youth, which I really enjoyed. In high school, I chose to study theatre, but I was also always involved in political activities or social justice clubs. I eventually got my master's degree in Global Governance and since then I have been working in the humanitarian sector, focusing on human rights, civic space and the meaningful inclusion of all people.
When I get home, I immerse myself in light-hearted and funny stories, both fantasy books and cheesy films. For instance, I have seen the film “10 things I hate about you” countless times. I love knowing how everything ends. Meeting my husband felt like a movie. A woman from Canada and a man from the Netherlands finding each other in South Africa. It makes you believe in destiny. I was in South Africa for an internship and to help organise a conference, he was there to attend the conference. After we met and fell in love, we had a long-distance relationship for a while, until I moved to the Netherlands and we started making plans for a future together. Always wanting to know how things would turn out, I asked him when he would propose to me. His marriage proposal was in the most romantic way imaginable and really shows how much he loves me. I am so happy that I have him and that we can live together.
