I have travelled extensively. When I was in my early twenties, I travelled to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Everything was new and special. It opened my eyes to the beauty that exists in the world and that I had previously been unaware of. Namibia made the biggest impression on me. It is the most beautiful country I have ever seen. Sometimes I imagine how special it would be to have my final resting place there one day — if that could be done with respect for the culture. I would like to become part of the desert there and give the person who will scatter my ashes the opportunity to see all that beauty with their own eyes.
Because of what my trip brought me, I decided to continue exploring the world. Among other places, I went to the Philippines and lived in Australia for a while. While travelling, I realised how important it is to treat other people with respect. My motto is therefore “Be kind”. If I could go back in time, I would give that motto to my younger self. I would also urge myself not to be afraid of things I don't know.
During one of my first trips, I met an 18-year-old girl. She was from Germany and worked as a translator in various parts of the world. I was very impressed by this, because I had no idea that such a thing was possible. She opened my eyes and sparked my desire to travel more in the future and chart my own course. That's how I ended up in the Netherlands. I had enrolled at the Art Academy in The Hague but had no idea whether I would be accepted. It was a very exciting time, but in the end it led me to the film academy.
