In my training sessions, too, I’m learning to be more relaxed. When you’re relaxed, you can react more quickly and read your opponent better. I’ve also learnt to take blows better and better through various training sessions. I often compare it to chess. In chess, if you make a wrong move, you lose one of your pieces. In Wing Chun, if you misjudge a situation, you get hit. So you get immediate feedback when you make mistakes, which you can then learn from straight away.

At first, I thought you mainly had to strike hard, but I’ve since realised that it’s actually by staying relaxed that you generate more power and speed. That’s also why I want to do more sparring in the future. That way, you can learn from it when the other person does something clever and enjoy the journey towards personal growth and development together.

Just go for it!

To anyone thinking about taking up Wing Chun, I can only say one thing: just go for it. The atmosphere and support at WuDae are really lovely. Here, you train with a great group of people. They’re very diverse, international, open-minded, friendly and helpful. It’s remarkable how that group comes together. You’re always training with different people, getting to know one another better, and afterwards we often stay for a friendly cup of coffee or tea together. That opportunity adds to the relaxed atmosphere at WuDae.

Bas is a stickler for detail, in the best possible sense. He always spots areas for improvement, which means you keep learning. That way, I can keep developing. It might sound a bit of a cliché, but for me it’s not about the destination, but the journey. I want to become physically and mentally stronger, more flexible and, above all, continue to enjoy practising the sport. WuDae is the perfect place for that.
