Although I really enjoy carrying out projects through my own business, I’d eventually like to go back to working for a larger company. To be surrounded by colleagues to work with. I think it would be absolutely wonderful to become the director of an organisation with a charitable mission – one where you can make a real difference to the lives of so many people.

Enjoying life

The happiest moments of my life were the births of my four children: Thomas, Merel, Simon and Robin. They’re all grown-ups now, and as I’m 53, I’m becoming increasingly aware of how quickly time flies. I try to enjoy life and to pass that on to the people around me.

A few years ago, I undertook a coaching programme to gain a better grasp of certain situations. The focus of this was on mapping out my own life story. At first, I didn’t really understand why, but eventually I came to realise just how much my parents have shaped the way I approach life today. For example, they always set an example by showing me that everyone is equal. It’s something so deeply ingrained in me that I’m actually still averse to hierarchy. Although I’ve also learnt that sometimes you have to find a way to navigate that. After all, people expect you to take the lead in certain situations. You’re all equal, but you don’t all have the same role within an organisation.

During my childhood, my parents did everything they could to give me a good upbringing. Just as my wife and I have done for our children. It hasn’t always been easy in our family. We’ve had to make impossible choices, but I hope that my children, too, will be able to enjoy the beautiful moments and experiences in life above all else.

Acting with a sense of ease

Looking back on my life, I do wish I’d sought out more adventure and dared to take more risks. I’ve always lived with a certain sense of security and safety, and now I’m increasingly convinced that things will work out. One way or another.
