A special journey

In January 2026, I went to Hong Kong on my own for a month. I thought it would be brilliant to learn Wing Chun at the source, in the place where it originated. For me, this was a huge step, because loneliness is one of my greatest fears. I was worried that after a week I wouldn’t enjoy it after all and would want to go back, but I’m really glad I did it.

I need structure in my life. Without it, I’d soon end up getting out of bed late, or watching loads of Netflix, for example, which would result in a whole string of wasted days. Other people help me to create that structure. In Hong Kong, too, I followed a busy schedule. I went to six or seven schools, where I trained in different styles two or three times a day, seven days a week. Every now and then, I was even glad to be on my own for a while. To be able to sit in the sun in the park and not have to do anything. To eat alone in a restaurant – something I wouldn’t normally have found enjoyable at all, but now it was lovely. A moment to myself. That was a special experience.

Puzzles

I absolutely love puzzles and solving problems. That came in very handy, because until recently I was working as the director of a large rental company. In that role, you’re faced with decisions every single day, and what you do in one department can have an impact on another. I enjoy thinking about that – solving complex puzzles that encompass all aspects of an organisation.

As well as looking around for a new job, I’m working on projects through my own consultancy firm, ‘Snuggur’. It specialises in organisational consultancy, with a holistic approach to management. I call this ‘quantum management’, where, rather than dividing the organisation up as in traditional management, the focus is on the interconnections and systemic impact of changes.
