All in all, there were enough clues to suggest I should take up a martial art. The final push came when, last summer, I took part in a challenge to do something exciting every day. It could be anything at all, so that was great fun. It brought back memories of the past. Sides of myself I hadn’t seen in a while, which is why I ended up re-watching Kill Bill. As I passed WuDae on the tram every day, I thought it would be nice to step out of my comfort zone a bit and sign up for a taster class. That turned out to be a real hit!
Especially in the first year, I’d go to class on cloud nine. I felt completely at home at WuDae straight away and really enjoy training there. By now, the novelty has worn off a bit, which means I’m entering a new phase. Now I have to muster the discipline to keep going, but as I still have so much to learn, that’s no problem.
The fact that the classes are at a set time helps. It gives me the structure I was missing at the gym and with one-off online classes. What also helps is that WuDae is a really friendly place. I feel at home here and I’m often in fits of laughter. It feels like a group of friends made up of lots of lovely and interesting people.
A martial art can be quite intimidating, but at WuDae I don’t feel any pressure or fear of failure. That makes it a real pleasure to train here. Wing Chun is therefore a sport I’d recommend to everyone! Most sports have a competitive element, where you’re pushed to improve, to win or to achieve something. Here, you really have to find that drive within yourself. I’m on my own if I want to learn more. It’s not because I have to, but because I want to. I apply this to other areas of my life as well.
Wing Chun is very varied and I really love the way the system is structured. The fact that there’s always a defence within an attack. I also think it’s really cool that this style was developed by a nun.
