We know Wing Chun Kung Fu as a martial art from the South of China, but what does Wing Chun actually mean literally? Where does this name come from? And what does this have to do with Kung Fu? We are happy to tell you more about it!
The literal meaning of Wing Chun is eternal spring. Depending on the writing style, it is also translated as beautiful spring or hymn of spring. What makes the meaning of the name even clearer is an explanation of the origin of Wing Chun. It is also the name of one of the first practitioners of this unique martial art.
A legend has it that a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui from the Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu temple, felt compelled to learn how to defend herself against other fighting styles. She decided to develop her own style, with which she would also use the weaknesses of Shoalin Kung Fu to her advantage.
In a store where she visited worked Yim Wing-Chun. A beautiful woman who was asked for her hand by a brutal fighter. Her rejection infuriated him and to protect herself she became an apprentice to Ng Mui.
Before Ng Mui left, she asked Yim Wing-Chun to find a worthy successor to her system. When Yim Wing-Chun married a Kung Fu practitioner, he was deeply impressed by the way she beat him several times. This is how they passed on this style under the name Wing Chun Kung Fu and it was practiced more and more.
