What do you learn in Kung Fu?

What does Kung Fu mean?

Almost everyone knows the name of this martial art, but what do you learn in Kung Fu? To understand that, it is important to know what Kung Fu means. The literal translation is namely practicing skills. Whatever style you are active in, you will train to master and constantly perfect these skills.

Kung Fu is also referred to as a lifestyle. The skills you practice have both a physical side and a mental side. By balancing both, you will also notice the difference in your daily life. You become fitter, more self-confident, can concentrate better and generally feel better about yourself.

Kung Fu styles

There are different Kung Fu styles that vary in skill and practice. This has to do, among other things, with the region where the style comes from and the way in which the style has been passed on.

Wing Chun Kung Fu originated in the South of China. Here the nun Ng Mui developed a new fighting style to use the weaknesses of the Shaolin Kung Fu to her advantage. She passed on this style to her namesake, Yim Wing Chun. Over the years, the skills have been practiced and further developed by different people.

With series of short, fast movements, Wing Chun is one of the more effective Kung Fu styles aimed at self-defense.

Wing Chun skills

Wing Chun Kung Fu has a number of power principles. First of all, you learn to be relaxed in order to properly anticipate the actions of your opponent. Then you learn to divert your opponent's power and turn it against itself. Finally, you will learn to add your own strength to overpower your opponent with minimal effort.

It is a style of offensive defense within five distances: kick, punch, knee/elbow, clinch and ground. You use your whole body for this. It is therefore important that you fully master your way of moving.

Wing Chun Kung Fu teaches you to further develop your body awareness, build a better condition and strengthen both your physical and mental strength. The goal of this way of training is to develop a healthy body and a healthy mind. By balancing these with each other, you go through life with more focus and confidence.
